Canyoning is a relatively new sport with many blank spaces on the map yet to be discovered. In 2013 Neil Silverwood had the toughest photography assignment of his life - photographing the first full descent of Gloomy Gorge, New Zealand's wildest canyon, for the New Zealand Geographic. The descent took nearly 24 hours and has not been attempted since. In 2015 Neil participated in a canyoning expedition funded by Sport New Zealand to explore a range of new canyons in New Zealand's South Island. His photos feature in the guidebook released after that expedition, Canyoning in New Zealand, by Daniel Clearwater.
